Matthew Kadi (b. 1982) is a photographer, videographer, designer, avid drummer and one of the pillar figures in our present-day California punk scene.
Introduced to punk rock and abstract art early in junior high by his teacher, mentor and friend Wendy Brasher, Matthew and his friends quickly started the now internationally renown, punk/hardcore band Monster Squad in 1997. Shortly after in 1998, his Great-grandmother handed down her Canon AE-1 35mm camera, sparking a lifelong interest in photography.
Eventually evolving into digital format due to developing costs and extensive touring, his later discovery of the inspiring Fuji digital cameras reignited his passion for capturing honest, spontaneous, intrinsic portraits of punks and people, alongside electrifying moments in various social events and the fun struggles of punk shows. He is inspired by the dedication of any creative person consistently "putting in the work."
Aside from drumming in Monster Squad, Matthew also performs with Great Apes, Build Us Airplanes and more recently, picking up the bass guitar in Holehog. He has exhibited his photography at large scale punk festivals (Manic Relapse, Punk Rock Bowling), a handful of gallery show, self-releases zines and a partnership with Jay Unidos and Serena Sigona from Urban Guerrilla Zine (UGZ) . Matthew has lived majority of his life in the Bay Area and now resides in Sacramento, California with longtime partner, Richelle and their beloved dogs.
